As far as ball mill safety goes, the motor should be completely separated from the milling area, so that no powder can get to the motor. Also, I shared my findings with the manufacturer of the hobbyist mill. It could be just coincidence, but their newer mills now have larger diameter jars. You probably won't find actual confirmation of my findings, because most pyros are more interesting in making pyro than making more work for themselves, just for the sake of learning.

you will want a small ball mill to grind your chems before screen mixing, putting oxidisers into blade mills followed by fuels is a no no so use seperate blade mills or risk a mixed fuel explosion in the motor. cohetes can use very hot bp or even whistle
If you plan on being a pyro long, plan on using lots of anti-static spray. To prevent the mill from being a triboelectric generator, use metal rollers (preferably ground them and the motor as well). I had a little mill for a while that operated like yours, it works but you'll outgrow it quickly.

To prevent your motor from burning out I would recommend 2-3lb's lead and 150-200g composition per jar. I personally use just over 2Lb's lead and 200g composition with a 1" O.D. drive roller in my 3Lb jars on these mills. PERFECT black powder in 20-23 hours. With 150g composition in the mill it's perfect in around 14 hours.
