Of special interest is the development of semi or fully autonomous systems to provide remote guidance and communications for coal mining equipment. We consider the use of radar and inertial based sensors in an attempt to solve the horizontal and lateral guidance problems associated with mining equipment automation.

For those living and working in coal regions, two aspects of the global energy disruption have become increasingly clear: coal is losing its commercial competitiveness; meanwhile, many populations, especially urban-based, are demanding cleaner air. Coal fueled the Industrial Revolution, but it also filled the skies with smog.

Australia's abundant reserve of minerals and rare earths has made mining one of the country's most established sectors [1]. As one of the largest mining countries in the world, the mining industry has always been crucial in Australia's development and economic growth, with mined natural resources equating to 70.7% of Australia's exports in 2022 [2].
